Frequently Asked Questions

What if I want a Single room?

No singles other than those in Grim will be available during the registration process.

Do I have to have a roommate?

You MUST have a roommate to participate in the housing registration. ALL rooms must be filled by you to their full capacity. We have to do this otherwise everyone will sign up for a room and then we will have to consolidate to open up rooms for the first year students. See below for options in finding a roommate.

Can you give me tips on finding a roommate?

If you are unable to locate a roommate through the Housing Personals (as listed below), complete a Contract Renewal Request and drop it by the Residence Life Office in Baldwin Hall 110. Please utilize the housing personals as your probability of fulfilling your housing preferences is greater than placement through our office.

Residence Life will be taking brief Roommate Preference ads that we will post daily on our website. These ads will include the following preferences:

  • Living Environment Preferences -- Top 3 hall/apartment complexes

  • Personal Preferences -- Outgoing, Neat, Non-Smoker, Smoker, Social, Accommodating, Quiet, Early Bird, & Night Owl.

All submissions may be posted on the website at http://reslife.truman.edu

What do you mean by "suite"?

A suite is two rooms that are connected internally, either by a bathroom (Ryle, Grim, BNB, Centennial) or a common area (West Campus Suites). Suites can be either selected as individual rooms or as an entire suite. To select a single room you would select "select room (must fill room)." To select an entire suite you would select "Select Suite (must fill suite)."

Can I stay in my own room?

Yes, except if you live in Dobson, or on one of the theme living floors. The easiest way is to participate in "Squatter's Rights." Squatter's Rights is Tuesday February 12th  thru Thursday February 14, 2008 from 8 AM to 5 PM in Baldwin 110. In order to sign up during squatter's rights and any other time you must fill your room to capacity.

Will I get the room I want?

It is likely that you will be able to select one of your top choices. In the past the vast majority of students have been able to find a room in their top three choices.

What if I can't make it to the registration process?

As long as you have internet access you should be able to register. If you do not then please contact our office at 660.785.4227 to make arrangements.

What if I lose my roommate after I signed up for a room?

If roommates decide that they will not be returning to Truman, or they decide that they do not want to return with their chosen roommate, one of two things will occur.

  1. If they decide during the summer we will place another student with you. A letter will be sent to your permanent address with your new roommate’s information, so you can contact one another.

  2. If it occurs during the school year then the consolidation process described on the previous page will apply.

Can I bring an air conditioner?

Ideally you would choose to live in either West Campus Suites or Missouri Hall. However, if you have health problems that necessitate the use of an air conditioner, you must get a new statement each year from a physician and present it to Residence Life by August 1, 2008. (There will be a $40 late fee for any note received after this date) There is a $100 energy fee per year for electrical costs (charged to your student account). The air conditioners must be no larger 6,000 BTU's. All residents with air conditioners are required to install their own air conditioner in their residence hall or apartment. The fee will be applied to your student account and can be paid at the cashier's office.

How do I get a Microfridge?

Microfridge registration is completed as part of the housing registration process.

Housing Options Dictionary

Singles/Buyouts
The only eight Single rooms on campus are located in Grim Hall. These rooms are slightly smaller than a normal double room, and share a community bathroom. Unfortunately, due to higher occupancy number in the residence halls we will be unable to grant any additional single requests this year to upperclassmen during the renewal process.
Doubles
The standard, two-person rooms on campus.
Triples & Quads
There are some triple (three-person) rooms in most of our buildings. Quads are rooms with the occupancy for four people. If selected, these rooms must be filled to capacity during renewal.
Community Restrooms
Generally, one bathroom for each gender per house that contains several sinks, toilets, and curtained showers. These facilities are cleaned each weekday by the housekeepers. (Dobson, Missouri, and part of Grim Halls)
Suite Restrooms
Generally, bathroom is shared by two rooms. Residents are responsible cleaning these facilities. (Available in Blanton, Ryle, Centennial, Brewer, and part of Grim Halls)
Apartments
1- and 2-bedroom apartments are available.
Due to demand, apartments cannot be bought out and are generally consolidated when spaces become available. It is advisable that you consider alternates should your roommate leave. If your roommate is leaving/graduating at any time during the contract, expect a new roommate. First-year students are not allowed to live in the apartments during their first semester, unless they are married or are 21 or older.
Casa Hispanica

What has changed this year?

  • Dobson will offline for renovations.

  • Sorority Housing returning to the 100's wing of BNB.

  • BNB 200's  and 300's wings will include co-ed areas with triples semi-suite single sex rooms on the 200's wing (similar to Ryle).

If I have a friend who will be a new student next year, may I sign us up for a room?

If you have a friend who will be a new student at Truman next year you may waive your right to choose a room and the Residence Life Office can place you in a room over the summer. You should fill in a Contract Renewal Request form with your preferences and roommate information and leave it with the housing office.

Can I change my room once it is assigned?

Room, roommate, or building changes can take place after the second week of classes during the Fall and Spring semester. This waiting period is necessary so the University can determine which students have returned for the semester. If it is evident that you and your roommate cannot live in peace and harmony, you should contact a hall staff member who will assist you in either facilitating or referring you to a mediation process between you and your roommate. Room assignments are for the entire year and only minimal changes will be permitted at semester.

What if I cancel my Housing Contract?

Once you have signed the Housing Contract it is a binding legal document. As such we have certain fees associated with breaking your contract. These fees can be found here.

Can I change rooms this summer?

No room changes will be permitted after signing your housing contract. You must wait until two weeks after the start of the semester.

Can I cancel/change my meal plan?

Meal plans cannot be changed once the semester has begun. All changes after that point will need to wait until the next semester. It is assumed that your meal plan will remain the same for both semesters. If you wish to change your meal plan for the following semester, you need to fill out your Spring Intention form or stop by the  Residence Life Office by the last day of the semester.

When are the halls open?

2008-2009

  • The Residence Halls open for upper-class students on Saturday, August 23, 2008 from 8 AM - 3 PM & Sunday, August 24, 2008 from 8 AM on.

  • The halls will close at 6 PM Saturday, May 9, 2009.

If I am in the apartments, can I stay over breaks?

Yes. The apartments residents are allowed to stay, at no extra cost, over all University breaks where the residence halls close.

Why do you require mediation for room moves?

As an educational component of your Truman experience, we feel that it would be a disservice if we did not attempt to help you develop valuable relationship and communication skills. The mediation process helps develop those skills which you will use with future roommates/partners in life. In addition, it is important that all residents of a room are aware of any room moves and be able to discuss the reasons for such changes.

What if I am studying abroad/interning in the fall?

Fill out and return the following form. Spring 2009 Housing Request Form (SP 2008)
